Photokina 2012: Designer Leica
Leica is known for its high-brow cameras almost as much as it is for its limited-edition designer versions. The latest, the Leica X2 "Edition Paul Smith", joins the pricey Leica M9 Hermes as one of Leica's growing limited editions.
The Paul Smith version of the X2 is finished in British Racing Green, capped with a luminescent orange top and what Leica calls an "eye-catching brilliant yellow" base, but which we think is more green-yellow in reality. But there's no disputing the "eye-catching" part, that's for sure.
Scrawled on top of the pop-up flash is a light bulb in obvious Paul Smith style, though we've been left wondering where the classic "stripes" are? Maybe they've been reserved for the box, which is something we were unable to see at the Leica stand at Photokina in Cologne, Germany.
The kit, which is limited to 1,500 numbered editions, comes with a Paul Smith leather case and strap included, both of which are embossed with the words "Paul Smith for Leica", as can be seen in our gallery of images.
The model we handled had "PR05/PR60" to its rear, but this is where the real deal, on-sale models will have their individual numbers from 1-1500. However Pocket-lint was told that the more prestigious numbers, such as 0001 and 1500, will be reserved for special occasions and are unlikely to be put on sale.
First impressions? Well it's striking, isn't it? It's sure to turn a few heads, but not only on account of its bold colour scheme, but also its price: a cool ?2,000 will reserve you the model, which will be available from October.
For full information about the Leica X2, take a look at our full review for all the specs. The limited-edition Paul Smith version doesn't offer any new features, it's all about the "style". But we'd still like more stripes.
Paul Smith for Leica includes a few other accessories too, you can check them out on the Paul Smith website.
