An expert's an expert, regardless of gender
Today is International Women’s Day, a day that is cause for both celebration and, unfortunately, concern. It celebrates the successes of women all over the world but it also highlights the concern that we are still living in a world where true equality is as rare as hen’s teeth. ?
Every now and again, you might hear rumblings in the news, particularly the media pages, about another high-profile woman being forced out of her position. The rumblings will usually centre around whether or not the woman in particular has been moved on because of her age, or even simply because she is a she.
For the vast majority of people, this thought is quite rightly reprehensible.
But there would seem to be an element of truth in these rumblings.
A recent exodus from BBC Radio 4 sparked the discussion again, and what you start to hear from some male-dominated quarters is a complaint that there aren't enough women at the top of their chosen fields for there to be more of them featured in public life.
Poppycock.
They might not be as high profile as their male counterparts, but they are most certainly there.
Perhaps it's the finding them that presents the challenge to some, especially if they can't be bothered to look very hard. If that's the case, it's easily remedied thanks to thewomensroom.org.uk.
This is an online database set up to bring together female experts so that they can raise their individual profiles, and when an expert is needed, one can be found.
You'd hope that a site like this wouldn't be necessary in the 21st century, but it seems it is, so we applaud and support it, today of all days.
