There is no try, there is only I do or I do not
Proposed changes to marriage laws in Scotland, whereby non-religious belief groups could also be given the right to marry couples, could allow Star Wars fans to be joined in matrimony by a Jedi.
The?Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill would allow groups promoting a belief to perform marriages, and that includes those who have designated themselves Jedis after the order in the Star Wars movies.
The bill was originally drawn up to account for groups such as Humanists, who are currently seen as a religious body even though their beliefs are strictly non-religious.
However, the Free Church of Scotland has reservations over the changes in marriage law. Speaking to the BBC, the Reverend Iver Martin said it was impossible to define what was a genuine belief and what was not. "The third category is quite astonishing because it is the so-called belief category without really defining what belief means," he said.
"There are loads of people in a diverse society like this for whom belief can mean virtually anything - the Flat Earth Society and Jedi Knights Society - who knows?"
The Scottish government will be seeking a public consultation on the bill in the near future. Not a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
