Jenny Tillotson's fragance-releasing capsules make everyday life more real

Jenny Tillotson

Jenny Tillotson is weaving scent into technology. "Smell is the forgotten sense," says Tillotson, a senior research fellow in fashion and textiles design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. "It is extremely seductive and can act as a communication vehicle." She is integrating scent capsules into clothing, jewellery and even mobile phones. Her vision is to create an electronic "nose" that sniffs out odours relating to negative emotions such as stress or fear, and a capsule that releases fragrances that improve your mood. "Citrus oils can reduce anxiety, peppermint is a good stimulant, lavender helps you relax," says Tillotson, 46, who splits her time between Saint Martins and the Institute of Biotechnology at Cambridge University.

She's been working on perfecting a SIM-card-sized scent-releasing capsule that will slot in to diverse objects. Last year, she collaborated with US outdoor-clothing company The North Face to integrate the capsule into a rucksack for runners. The bag has a small front pocket that the wearer can press while running to release an energising peppermint scent.
