The launch of the newest edition of SimCity has brought with it a host of problems that have left players gnashing their teeth and pounding their fists against the sodden earth -- problems so widespread that Amazon has even resorted to adding a warning for customers that the game might not work when they buy it.
To play SimCity -- which should really be called SimCity 5, but as it's a reboot lacks the numerical indicator -- players have to remain connected to the web, and one of EA's servers, at all times. While it does have a gameplay function (it populates nearby landscapes with other player's cities), it's mostly there as a DRM measure. As with other games with always-on DRM like Diablo III, that annoyed a lot of people. It's even more annoying because the game launched worldwide this week but many people have been locked out of the game because EA's servers can't handle the traffic, turning the launch into a car crash.
