Lego Bionicles star in Arduino-powered synth band

Bionciles

When Italian sound designer and music producer Giuseppe Acito set about launching his new blog -- Factory Sonico -- he had twenty years of industry experience to draw on. Rather than producing a standard musical showpiece to show off his skills, Acito built himself his own band.

Using Lego Bionicle heroes, Acito rigged the pint-sized figures up to an iPad running a MIDI sequencing app Clavia NordBeat, whose notes are converted into electrical impulses by an Arduino Uno unit. A series of motors then animate the Toa Mata Band, causing them to strike drum pads, xylophone keys, a Gakken analogue synthesiser, and even a Nintendo DS.
