Electronic tattoos printed on skin to transmit medical data

Temporary electronic tattoos that monitor wellbeing have been developed at a US laboratory, paving the way for future connected healthcare networks.

The invention, flagged up by MIT Technology Review, follows a preliminary system developed in 2011 by the same team -- then, the tiny electronic grids were stuck on like tattoo transfers and would never have been practical for use over long periods of time. This time around, material scientist John Rogers and his University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign team are printing the grids straight onto human flesh using rubber stamps, then sealing them with protective spray-on plasters available at any chemist.
