Slackware 14.0 now available, freshens and simplifies a Linux vanguard

Slackware 14 now available, freshens and simplifies a Linux vanguard

When it comes to Linux distributions, Slackware could well be called the archetype. It's not just one of the longest-serving releases at nearly 20 years old -- it's designed to be "pure" and cut back on customized apps, many graphical interface assistants and the requirement to download anything during the installation process. Pat Volkerding and team have nonetheless given us a bit of a break with the launch of Slackware 14.0. While many open-source fans will be downloading a copy for the more recent Linux 3.2.29 kernel and other updated packages, ease of use is the guiding principle for the new build: there's now a graphical NetworkManager interface to manage wired and wireless connections, for a start. In tandem with the newer kernel, updated versions of the KDE and Xfce desktop environments also result in much broader hardware support than many veteran users will remember. Slackware is now much more savvy about removable storage, accelerated 3D video, SATA and other features that have sometimes demanded command line trickery. Anyone can download the revamped distribution for free, including for ARM-based devices like the Raspberry Pi, although we'd consider springing for the $33 subscription to CD-based copies of Slackware to fund Volkerding's long-term efforts.

Disney’s latest animated adventure film, Wreck-It Ralph, sees some of our favourite video game bad guys make cameos, including characters from Streetfighter II, Sonic and Mario.

Due in cinemas in time for Christmas, the film sees Ralph, a villain from the (fictional) arcade game Wreck-It Ralph, decide that he no longer wants to be the bad guy, but instead focus his abilities on doing good.

This results in Ralph abandoning the arcade game he has been integral to for the past 30 years and heading to “Game Central Station” for pastures new.

That’s not before we see him attending a “Bad-Anon” meeting – mantra: One Game At A Time – where Zangief and M. Bison from Streetfighter II fame, Bowser from Super Mario Bros, and Doctor Eggman, Sonic’s nemesis, are also in attendance.

Wreck-It Ralph will be hitting cinemas in 3D this November and will feature the voices of John C. Reilly, Saturday Night Live’s Sarah Silverman and 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer.

Nightline uses Find My iPad to sting stickyfingered TSA officer

Oops! It seems the folks at ABC News set up a little sting with TSA agents and wayward iPads. Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well for the agent (warning: auto-play video at that link). The iPad, however, survived both the abduction and the "generous" pat-down.

The news show Nightline intentionally abandoned an iPad at an Orlando, Fla., checkpoint (among others). They then used Apple's Find My iPad app to track its movements once it had been recovered. Unfortunately, it traveled to a TSA agent's home, where it remained for two weeks until a camera crew and reporter arrived to retrieve it from a much chagrined employee.

This was just one story from an investigation that had Nightline leave 10 iPads at security checkpoints in major airports across the US. The full story will air on Nightline this evening.

Maserati picks Bowers & Wilkins for in car audio from 2013

From 2013 Italian sports car manufacturer Maserati will fit all its cars with audio sound systems made by Bowers & Wilkins.

The long-term partnership will produce a new high-performance car sound system, created by Bowers & Wilkins in collaboration with Maserati, and available exclusively in Maserati cars from 2013. The deal isn't however expected to affect Jaguar, which also uses B&W in some of its cars.?

Both companies are keeping their cards close to their chest about what we can expect in terms of features and specs, but to kick off the exciting news the two have made a music video?using the notes made from the Maserati engine, called the "Seven Notes" tracks.?

"I’m confident we’ve come up with something very special," said Evert Huizing, one of the top-level execs at?Bowers & Wilkins.?"By working closely with Maserati engineers, we’ve designed a system perfectly adapted to the unique challenges of the car environment, and one which will deliver great sound and transform the driving experience."

Both Maserati and Bowers & Wilkins have also said that a range of high-performance loudspeakers and headphones will become available as part of the partnership though, like the cars systems themselves, little else is known.

Still it’s enough to get us watching this space closely.

NCSoft and Nexon to buy Valve?

[UPDATE] Asian online game giants reportedly in talks to acquire Half-Life house; NCSoft representative squashes speculation, saying, "There are no grounds to this rumor"; Valve adds, "Total rumor."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a NCSoft representative told GameSpot, "There are no grounds to this rumor." Additionally, a Valve spokesperson said, "Total rumor."

The original story follows below

Two of Asia's biggest online game companies, Nexon and NCSoft, are reportedly in talks to acquire Half-Life and Counter-Strike developer Valve Software. The news comes from a Korean news report at JoongAng Ilbo (translated by Polygon), which claims top executives at both companies met in Hawaii recently to discuss a deal.

The report cites an anonymous industry source, which claims NCSoft CEO Jin Kim and Nexon CEO Kim Jung-ju are discussing moving stock and selling off real estate to gather the cash necessary to purchase Valve.

A price tag for the company was not mentioned, but a recent Forbes report estimated Valve's worth at $3 billion, half of which belongs to Gabe Newell.

Nexon is currently licensing Valve's Counter-Strike brand for its microtransaction-based Counter-Strike Online in Asian markets. A sequel is also in development. Additionally, numerous Nexon games, like Maple Story and Combat Arms, are presently available through Valve's digital distribution hub Steam.

Valve is an independently held company, and has reportedly fielded buyout offers before. A recent New York Times report suggested big-time United States publisher Electronic Arts was interested in purchasing the company for $1 billion. Newell, however, said he would rather see Valve disintegrate than be bought out.

A Nexon representative declined to comment on the rumor. Spokespersons from Valve and NCSoft were not immediately available.

Canned CFO Tim Morse Was Happy To Leave Marissa Mayer's Yahoo (YHOO)

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer

Earlier this week, just before new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer got in front of the company's employees and announced a turnaround plan, the news broke:

Long time CFO Tim Morse would not be attending the meeting.

In fact, Morse was out of the company – canned and replaced by a new CFO, Ken Goldman.

This was surprising to some because Mayer and Yahoo shareholders owe Morse a lot of gratitude.

During his time at the company, he served as temporary CEO. He also deeply cut costs and even managed to grow Yahoo's bottom line as revenues shrank.

Morse is also leaving Yahoo only days after finally completing the transaction of a life time; he sold a portion of Yahoo's stake in Internet company Alibaba, netting Yahoo $4.3 billion. Most of that money will be returned to shareholders in the next few weeks (or perhaps days).

All that said? It's understandable why Mayer replaced Morse.

He was the choice of a former CEO. Mayer needs people in the C-suite that owe their allegiance to her. She needs believers. She, in turns, needs to have full faith in the folks she leans on most.

For Morse's part, a source close to the now former Yahoo CFO says that he is happy to have gotten the axe: That he was tired, fully vested, and thinks Yahoo "is a crazy place right now."

He also got a huge severance package and he is already close to having another job.

Beyond that, we're told that Morse was probably going to find his own way out of company at some point soon, no matter what. He might not have even stayed if Yahoo veteran and former interim CEO Ross Levinsohn had gotten the job. Morse has gone through five CEOs since he joined Yahoo – including himself in an interim role for a time. No wonder he wanted out; that much turmoil is exhausting.

What's more, from what this one source is telling us, Morse's style conflicted with Mayer's. He is a meticulous cost-cutter. Mayer is not.

In her two months, she's given Yahoos some Google-style perks--most famously free food and free iPhones. None of those things are actually free, and our source close to Morse says he does not believe Yahoo will be able to grow its revenue fast enough to make it all worthwhile. (Our view is that Mayer had to fix morale and that a few million dollars for food and phones is nothing for a company with revenues in the billions.)

This source says one particular expenditure by Mayer especially drove Morse up the wall.

Before Mayer joined Yahoo, the company had a modest Christmas party planned for December, to be held in San Jose. After Mayer joined, she had the date of the party changed: it conflicted with her own personal Christmas party, which is a must-attend by the biggies in the Valley. Then Mayer decided to throw the party in San Francisco, where space is much more expensive. According to this source, the cost of the shindig went from ~$100,000 to ~$3 million.

Countering this source's view is new CFO Ken Goldman's reputation as a cost-cutter himself.

In the end, Mayer was smart to part with Morse, if only because he may not have faith she can do the job.

Rumor has it she told the board that Yahoo will double its revenues in the next two years.

"Tim doesn't see it," says our source. "He's thrilled he won't be the one holding that bag."
