There is a word that is uttered in these Olympic times that has become almost synonymous with the bureaucratic build-up, the political posturing and point scoring and the perceived heavy-handed corporate mentality of the Games.

That word is “legacy”.

It featured so heavily in the spoof BBC Twenty Twelve it's almost impossible not to snigger every time you hear it. But as the Games draw towards their close, it’s starting to do the rounds of talk shows and news bulletins with a bit more regularity and volume.

If the 30th Olympiad is to be remembered for more than just a few weeks, or months, then the organisers really need to make good on their much-lauded motto: “inspire a generation”.

At academy.uka.org we find an organisation that's taking on that challenge and setting out to get the next generation of track and field superstars into the system and on the path to success.

Whether you’re a teacher, a coach, a parent, or even a youngster with a bit of a flair for the running and the jumping, this site will give you all the info you need to get involved in athletics at a meaningful level.

If the London Games have given us nothing else it must surely be a new set of role models in the likes of Ennis, Farah, Bolt and Rudisha.
