Red giant accused of eating one of its planets

In five billion years time, as the Sun reaches the end of its lifespan, it'll spectacularly devour Earth. We're unlikely to be around to see it happen, so in the meantime we'll have to console ourselves with watching other planets die.

1,800 years or so ago, the star BD+48 740 in the constellation Perseus expanded dramatically in size as the supply of hydrogen in its core ran out. Light from that event has only just reached Earth, and specifically the telescopes of the McDonald Observatory in Texas, manned by a team of Americans, Poles and Spaniards.
