Dell XPS 14 and XPS 15 pictures and hands-on

Ivy Bridge powerhouses

Dell has introduced two new ultrabooks to its XPS range in the shape of the XPS 14 and XPS 15 and Pocket-lint has been lucky enough to get some hands-on time with both.

As their names suggest both laptops feature bigger screens than their predecessor the XPS 13, with the XPS sporting a 14-inch display and the XPS 15 a 15-inch. There are different variants of both depending on how much you want to fork out, with an option for either an i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge processor.

The Dell XPS 14 is also available as a Wi-Fi-only model or as a Pay As You Go version that enables you to gobble up data using a network as opposed to a Wi-Fi connection, while it also sports a rather fetching leather back that also helps avoid signal interference, allegedly.

Another key difference is that the Wi-Fi only version features an Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU, whereas the PAYG houses a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M GPU.

The XPS 14’s Corning Gorilla display has a resolution of 1600 x 900 and a brightness of 400 nit. Packed with 8GB of RAM, memory can be topped up via an additional driver or SSD card.

The bigger Dell XPS 15 features a higher resolution screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels, which again is protected with Corning Gorilla display. Customers can choose between an inbuilt DVD-RW or a Blu-ray player, while there’s also a choice in processors; an NVIDIA GeForce GT630M chip with 1GB of dedicated RAM or an NVIDIA GeForce GT640M chip with 2GB.

The other key differences between the Dell XPS 14 and XPS 15 is the weight, 4.6 pounds and 5.79 pounds respectively, oh and of course the price. The Dell XPS 14 has begun shipping in the US from $1,099 while the XPS 15 starts from $1,299.

No word on UK shipping just yet, but the fact they have gone on sale in the US suggests we won’t have to wait long.

UPDATE? Dell has revealed pricing on its UK website for some versions of both the XPS 14 and XPS 15, starting at ?1049 and ?1149 respectively. Expect more variants with different price points to be added soon.
