We’re just weeks away from the start of the London 2012 Olympics and now iPhone and Android smartphone users can download the official BBC Olympics app for free.

The app itself is a must for sports fans, with up to 24 live streams beamed directly to your smartphone. Full listings of schedules and results are all provided, while users can also save news stories to read offline.?

For every athlete competing in the games, BBC has construed a short profile, so you’ll be able to read up on that Russian weightlifter or Swedish volleyball player. Miss any of the action and users will also be able to catch up with uploaded highlights.

Though the app is available free of charge on both the iOS and Android platforms, only iPhone users will be able to personalise a customisable tab bar with their favourite sports. As for BlackBerry users, we’re afraid the best you can get is a shortcut app that will simply bookmark the BBC Olympics website for you.

BBC also recently announced that a Facebook app is available that enables up to 24 live streams of London 2012 to be watched through the social network.
