Deity-based MOBA SMITE will not use Jewish, Christian, Islamic figures

Controversy from inclusion of Hindu figures prompts response from Hi-Rez Studios COO.

Hi-Rez Studios' upcoming game SMITE has made waves for its depiction of combat between the deities of various religions, but the studio is steering clear of some of the world's largest faiths.

Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios' chief operating officer, responded to GameSpot about controversy resulting from the inclusion of Hindu figures in its upcoming multiplayer online battle arena. The figures' appearances in the game prompted Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, to request their removal from the game, as he said putting the deities under player control trivialized them.

Harris initially responded by stating that Hi-Rez decided to use figures from the Hindu faith because it is one of the world's oldest and most diverse religions, providing a good base of inspiration for several characters. SMITE also pulls from Greek, Chinese, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies, Harris stated. The game, which is now in closed beta, will include more deities as development continues, not fewer.

GameSpot requested comment on whether the company plans to implement figures from Abrahamic (Jewish, Christian, and Islamic) religions into its game in keeping with its diverse roster of characters. Harris answered, saying Hi-Rez includes a diverse staff and that Abrahamic figures were not included mostly for gameplay reasons: its tradition does not have stories about deities fighting one another with "awesome abilities," he said.

"From [the] perspective of a video game, the key Abrahamic figures--Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, are not that interesting in character design or gameplay. They are all human. They never overlapped or interacted with one another. They certainly never fought each other in dramatic fashion with unique abilities. They are all peaceful--at best they would be support characters," Harris said.

Call of Duty: Black Ops hitting Mac this fall

Activision's 2010 first-person shooter hitting Apple computers courtesy of regular series publisher Aspyr Media this fall at retail and online.

Almost two years after its original release on consoles, Windows PCs, and mobile devices, Activision's megapopular shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops is headed to the Mac. Regular Call of Duty publisher Aspyr is bringing the game to the Mac platform this fall at retail and online, according to an announcement on the firm's website.

Call of Duty: Black Ops hitting the Mac is big news for Aspyr. Company executive vice president Ted Staloch said the launch of Black Ops represents the "biggest" software debut in the firms' 17-year history.

Players who pick up the Mac version of Black Ops will also be able to purchase the game's four downloadable content add-ons. The First Strike, Escalation, Annihilation, and Rezurrection packs will be made available "later this year." More details will be announced "soon," Aspyr said.

Aspyr has published a host of Call of Duty games for the Mac, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty 2, and the original Call of Duty. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the best-selling entry in the shooter series to date, moving more than 25 million copies as of August 2011.

For more on the original Black Ops, check out GameSpot's review of the console version.

GameStop to carry the Nexus 7 as well, starts accepting pre-orders

Nexus 7

Ordering online is not something that everyone wants to do, for folks like myself the instant gratification of purchasing and taking home the same day is rather important. GameStop has announced that they will be selling the Nexus 7 in stores and they have began their pre-ordering process as well. To spice up the deal, and bring folks in they will be accepting trade ins on other tablets, and any trade ins that are done specifically towards the purchase of the Nexus 7 will gain you an extra 30% in store value. GameStop understands that Android tablets are becoming increasingly popular, and many gaming customers are looking towards the purchase of tablets for their on the go experience, and they hope to capitalize on this with offering the Nexus 7 in store instead of having customers have to wait to purchase it online. So, will you be ordering from Google Play, or looking for some old items to trade in and grabbing one from GameStop?

Swedish smartphone photography marketplace Foap launches in UK

Swedish startup Foap lets anyone with a smartphone (read: iPhone) become a stock photography seller. Having launched in the Sweden in May, it has now launched in the UK and the US.

Users can upload their photos to Foap's marketplace, where the pictures can be bought for $10 each (£6.40). In a model echoing that of citizen journalism site Demotix, 50 percent of that goes to the photographer and 50 percent goes to Foap. All photos have to be manually approved to make sure that they are of sufficiently high quality and hipster filters are banned.

LucasArts creative director quits

Splinter Cell, Far Cry dev Clint Hocking leaves San Francisco studio for new mystery company on the heels of Star Wars 1313 announcement.

After two years, LucasArts creative director Clint Hocking has left the Star Wars studio. In a terse update to his personal blog, Hocking wrote that he has found new work and is in the process of relocating out of San Francisco, California.

Hocking joined LucasArts in 2010, and his time at the company was spent working on multiple unannounced projects. Previously, Hocking was employed at Ubisoft, where he worked on the 2002 original Splinter Cell game and its 2005 sequel, Chaos Theory, for which he served as the game's creative director. The developer was also creative director on 2008's Far Cry 2.

Hocking's departure from LucasArts comes after the company's announcement of Star Wars 1313, a new third-person action game. The project has players taking on the role of a bounty hunter navigating a subterranean metropolis, Level 1313, beneath the surface of the planet Coruscant. Star Wars 1313 is a LucasArts collaboration, with Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation Ltd, and Skywalker Sound all contributing.

Reports than Amazon is close to launching a 10-inch, quad core Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire

Apparently, Amazon isn't just working on the Kindle Fire 2 -- the retail giant is also finally getting close to releasing its long-rumored 10-inch, quad-core Kindle Fire, according to a report from BGR. Amazon is set to launch both of its tablets in the coming month, offering improved build quality and materials.

The news of Amazon's reported tablets comes hand-in-hand with Google's Nexus 7 tabletannouncement at Google I/O on Wednesday. The Nexus 7 tablet, which focuses on entertainment consumption, takes direct aim at the current Kindle Fire. And the form factor similarities between the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire are impossible to ignore.

Three UK customers can grab Android 4.0 for the Sony Xperia S

Android Central

This post will be short and sweet and more than likely overshadowed by this weeks Google I/O news, however Sony Xperia S users on the Three network will be happy.

Three kindly dropped me an email today to confirm that their customers can now proactively download the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Sony Xperia S. The update is via PC Companion only so users will not get a push notification which is odd, however Three are the first UK network to offer the update to the Xperia S. Good news!

It's iPhone's 5th Birthday: Here Are Its 5 Most Viral Videos Ever

birthday

It's hard to believe the iPhone has only been around for five years.

To celebrate its fifth birthday, Unruly Media created a list of the iPhone's most viral ads ever, based on how many people liked the video enough to share it with their friends in social media. There's no better present than telling a 5-year-old how popular it is.

Even though Apple recently enlisted celebrities, like Samuel L. Jackson and Zooey Deschanel, to star in its ads, it turns out that the videos that really resonated with viewers were the ones starring the iPhone itself, and its various apps (Siri, FaceTime and iCloud). Nobody can outshine its aesthetically pleasing hardware.

BlueStacks lets Android apps run on OS X

In a matrimonial launch event outside Google I/O, BlueStacks announced the release of its Android app player for the Mac. The virtualization technology lets Mac users install Android apps directly on their machine. It will debut with select titles from HandyGames, Creative Mobile and Pulse.

Besides being able to tap into a new distribution channel, at least one developer is motivated by the lucrative Mac market. "We love any new distribution channels that open up to us and this is a big one," said Andrew Zhang, CEO of popular app developer Droidhen, maker of the "Defender" series. "Mac users also spend more money - we're excited to have our apps involved."

Earlier this year, the company released a beta PC version that reached one million downloads in little over a week.

BlueStacks Opens Up Apple Ecosystem to Android Developers

Mac version of company's "App Player" brings 400,000 Android Apps to Macs for the first time. Product goes live at Android & Mac "Wedding" launch event outside Google I/O.

San Francisco, Calif. - June 27, 2012 - BlueStacks today announced the release of the Mac version of an Android App Player in public alpha. The downloadable software, currently free of charge, was made available on the company's homepage, BlueStacks.com. The software is powered by BlueStacks' patent-‐pending LayercakeTM technology. The initial release features several apps from the company's developer partners, such as HandyGames, Creative Mobile and Pulse, with the next release scheduled to expand things even more.

The company launched a PC version in March of this year that reached one million downloads in just nine days. "Our PC version took off a lot faster than we had planned for. People are spending a lot of time on their smartphones and want the same experience on all devices." said BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma," By bringing Android Apps to Mac we are breaking open the Apple ecosystem, which has traditionally been closed. Also, Android is struggling because of a lack of tablet applications. Developers now have an incentive to build hi-‐res apps to work on the resolutions like retina displays on the new mac for example."

"We love any new distribution channels that open up to us and this is a big one." Said Andrew Zhang, CEO of popular app developer Droidhen, maker of the "Defender" series. "Mac users also spend more money - we're excited to have our apps involved."

"HandyGames has a history of trying new things and seeing what sticks," said Markus Kassulke, CEO of HandyGames. "Working with BlueStacks on the PC version has gotten us a boatload of new discovery for Clouds & Sheep and our other apps. We're looking forward to this next frontier."

The launch event took place in a large wedding tent across from Moscone West, where the Google I/O conference is currently underway. The ceremony and demo was attended by Android developers from around the world. Developer partners of BlueStacks include HalfBrick, Evernote, Droidhen, COM2US and many others. The company posted a signup on their website for more developers who would like a Mac version of their app.
