ICO Commissioner slams EU data protection directive

EU law

UK Information Commissioners past and present have called the proposed changes to the European Data Protection Directive bad for business, and say it should -- in its current form -- be thrown out. Their announcement comes the same week market analysis firm Ovum released a survey revealing 68 percent of internet users would prefer their personal data to remain invisible.

As the European Commission prepares to further debate the recommended changes to its much-outdated data protection regulations, it looks like it will have more to contend with than US lobbyists battling for the interests of Facebook, Google and other tech giants that rely on advertising earnings made possible by the mining of personal data. Speaking at an event on Data Protection Day, current Commissioner Christopher Graham said the burden of the tightened directive would fall on the struggling average business, rather than those truly taking advantage of personal data, reports The Register.
