That's er, a million a day
Apple has revealed that sales of iPads, including the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad, have topped three million units in the three days since their release on Friday 2 November. And that's not including Wi-Fi plus cellular versions of the two new tablets, as those are not due to ship for a few more weeks.
The previous opening weekend record was set at 1.5 million units of the Wi-Fi-only version of (what is known as) the iPad 3. This latest statistic proves there's still plenty of interest, even though the starting price of the iPad mini has been criticised by many, and?day one queues outside flagship stores were disappointing in comparison to the iPhone 5 launch.
"Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."
At present the iPad mini is listed for dispatch in "two weeks" on the online UK Apple Store for all storage sizes and colours. The iPad 4 - listed as "iPad with Retina display" - fares better with a three to four-day turnaround.
