Selling faster than Windows 7
Microsoft has announced that four million customers paid for a Windows 8 upgrade in the first three days of the new operating system becoming available.?
Speaking at the Microsoft BUILD conference, Steve Ballmer, CEO, said that Windows 8 was proving more popular than its predecessor Windows 7 when that was initially launched in 2009.?
“The level of embrace from enthusiasts, from people who want to get out there, is very, very high,” said Ballmer.?
Despite Microsoft’s impressive sales figures, it is worth noting that the company is actually offering the upgrade at a more affordable price point than when Windows 7 was introduced.?
For example, customers can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just ?24.99, while a DVD version of the software costs ?49. In contrast Windows 7 was available for ?49.99 for a Home Premium version and ?99.99 for an upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.?
Yet despite this deviation in price, Windows 8 is seemingly proving more popular than some had anticipated. Ballmer also added that Microsoft had “sold tens of millions of units to our corporate customers”.?
These include customers who have purchased licensing in volume as well as Software Assurance subscriptions, meaning they can upgrade as and when they choose.?
After being criticised for a lack of apps in the Windows Store, Microsoft has announced that Twitter and Dropbox applications will soon be joining the likes of Netflix, Skype and Angry Birds Space.
