EU to free up 120 MHz of 3G spectrum for 4G services

The European Commission has announced that EU countries must open up the 2 GHz band of radio spectrum traditionally used to deliver 3G connectivity in order to allow operators to deliver 4G services.

The Commission has ruled that member states must open up the 120 MHz frequency band (1920-1280 MHz paired with 2110-2170 MHz) by 30 June 2014 at the latest. The move will allow the EU to take advantage of as much as twice the amount of spectrum for high-speed wireless broadband as the United States -- around 1000 MHz. The "harmonised liberalisation" of the spectrum will help to prevent market fragmentation within 4G.
