Windows RT tablets are the must-have device for those looking to get some portable entertainment fun out of the latest software launch from Microsoft. While Windows 8 brings the full-fat, desktop, in-depth computing experience for laptops and the like, it's Windows RT that concentrates on the Windows top-end interface known as Metro or Modern UI. Read here for more details on the difference between Windows 8 and Windows RT.

So, which Windows RT tablet is the one that suits your needs? Here are the best Windows RT tablets around at the moment and, because it's early days, we'll be making sure to add to the list when our boys in the review labs have decided that they've found another Windows RT tablet cracker. Stay tuned.

Samsung Ativ Tab

Featuring a 10.1-inch display and weighing 570g, the Samsung Ativ Tab gives a more traditional tablet form factor in comparison to the Samsung Ativ Smart PC. It sports a svelte 8.9mm waistline, comes preloaded with both Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT preview.

Inside is a dual-core 1.5GHz processor - two cores less than the likes of the Note 10.1 - and it seems a pretty slick device. USB 2.0 and micro HDMI ports are nice to see on a tablet and reinforce the fact that this is a proper Windows device. As for the rest, the tablet has a 5-megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.9-megapixel one on the front. Keeping it all running is an 8200mAh battery. Samsung Ativ Tab pictures and hands-on

Microsoft Surface RT

Surface for Windows RT is never going to be mistaken for an iPad. From the black case, with a vapour-deposited protective coating and discreet Windows logos on the front and back, to the square corners and chamfered edges, Surface has its own style. The idea is for the hardware to disappear into the background, leaving you with just Windows.

It has Metro/Modern-happy 16:9, 720p, 10.6-inch ClearType screen topped with Gorilla Glass 2 and that magnetic keyboard and kickstand too. It’s all powered by an Nvidia ARM chip, it weights 676g and comes with connectors for microSD, USB with storage options in 32 and 64GB sizes. One to watch out for. Dell XPS 10 Windows RT tablet

Dell announced at IFA 2012 that its first foray into the world of Windows RT tablets will be called the XPS 10.?The tablet will feature a detachable keyboard, as seems to be the trend right now, and it will be backlit for a much better experience.

To make use of that keyboard, you'll also have Microsoft Office - which is standard on Windows RT devices - and a microSD slot along with a micro-USB connection for your choice of peripherals. The screen will also be "HD", although as yet we don't know if that's 1280x720 or 1920x1080.?The XPS 10 will, according to Dell, have 20 hours' battery life. Somewhat mega. Asus Vivo Tab RT

Asus wants to make your Windows RT tablet dreams come true with the Asus Vivo Tab RT docker. Sibling of the full Windows 8 model, this is an MS version of one of the hugely successful transformer products.?The Asus Vivo Tab RT is slightly smaller than the W8 one.

It is based around a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display and is powered by the Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset, with 2GB RAM, so is very much the mobile device.?In the hand it feels sturdy and well constructed, the metal finish to the back giving it a good-quality feel. The buttons around the side of the tablet, and the build of the accompanying keyboard feel assured. Asus Vivo Tab RT pictures and hands-on

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11

The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga comes in an 11-inch RT form as well as the much written-about full Windows 8 13-inch edition. With a Tegra 3 chip at the helm, this laptop becomes tablet enough for us once you bend the screen all the way back on itself.

The display is a non-IPS, 1366 x 768 piece of glass and loses the USB 3.0 input that its bigger brother gets to enjoy. It’s not cheap at ?699 and it’s not light either at a hefty 1.27kg but it certainly offers a slightly different option from the others above. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 pictures and hands-on
