Following up from the very public demonstration of the first 3D printed gun's live shots, the firearm's creator has published its design instructions online.
Computer-aided design (CAD) files for various gun parts have previously been made available online, and were already contentious. Shorty after the tragedy at Sandy Hook in December 2012 for instance, 3D printer manufacturer Makerbot removed files related to gun parts from its CAD database. Now, the instructions for a gun that has been entirely built using 3D printing and successfully tested, can be made by anyone with access to the right printer. For now, at least, the device can only be printed on the more expensive $8,000 (£5,150) Stratasys Dimension SST 3D. But with models like 3D System's Cube 3D selling at $1,299 (£836), already trumping Markerbot's $2,199 (£1,416) Replicator 2, it may not remain unattainable for long.
