A Disappointed Online Shopper Invented A Better Way To Find Coupon Codes That Work

coupons and freebies mom pinterestGidi Fisher was shopping online two years ago when he decided to look for a coupon code.

He found several — but they didn't work.

"I realized in that moment that consumers go to aggregators for coupon codes, but no one has taken the time to fix the broken process," Fisher told Business Insider. "People shouldn't have to spend half an hour copying and pasting to see if coupon codes work."

So Fisher started PoachIt, an in-beta website that shows users valid coupon codes for thousands of vendors' products.

The process is simple: users grab the PoachIt button, then go shopping online. When the shopper finds an item he likes, he clicks the button to display valid coupon codes or "favorite" an item to get a notification if and when it goes on sale.

Because of increased competition online, retailers have started changing their prices as frequently as airlines, Fisher said.

"Most people think stuff doesn't go on sale until the end of the season, but in reality merchants are changing pricing constantly," he said. "Something on sale today might be back to full retail price tomorrow.

The company, which is based in New York, has about 20,000 users so far.

If you're interested in using PoachIt, just visit their website and request to try the service in beta. The site will officially launch in mid-May.

Thorsten Heins: tablets aren't a good business model, BlackBerry aiming to lead mobile computing in five years

Thorsten Heins tablets aren't a good business model, BlackBerry aiming to lead mobile computing in five years

Holding out for a post-RIM version of the PlayBook? That waiting likely won't end any time soon. BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins used an interview yesterday to discuss the mobile environment five years out. Seems he's feeling particularly bullish about his own company's prospects. "In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing -- that's what we're aiming for," he told the interviewer. "I want to gain as much market share as I can, but not by being a copycat."

Not being a copycat may likely involve staying away from the crowded tablet market. "In five years I don't think there'll be a reason to have a tablet anymore," according to the CEO. "Maybe a big screen in your workspace, but not a tablet as such. Tablets themselves are not a good business model." This certainly isn't the first time the exec has expressed caution about the space in the wake of the PlayBook's lukewarm reception. Heins has mentioned in the past that the company won't jump back into tablets unless it sees the potential for profits.

Google Now hits iOS, still better on Android, though

Google Now

Android version is more fluid, and is still the best Google Now experience

There's a little excitement this morning in the iOS camp as the Google Search app has been updated, brining Google Now cards to the fray. You get the same information you get on Android, with the same card design -- but  it's a vastly different experience.

On Android, you simply open Google Now, and everything's there. Sports scores. Weather. Directions. Birthdays. Whatever. It takes a couple more steps on iOS. They're well-animated steps, but it takes the "Wow!" factor out of the entire operation. You're going to get the information instead of it being right there, almost before you knew you needed it.

So, yeah. Google Now's now on iOS. But it's defnitely still better on Android.

Ballistic's new Aspira case line for iPhone 5

This will be a rather quick review, not just because silicone iPhone 5 cases are quite commonplace, but because there are mainly just good things to say about these new cases from Ballistic Case. They're all members of the Ballistic Case Aspira series for the iPhone 5 (US$34.99), and three readers will have a chance to win one.

Design

The Aspira cases are lightweight, skinny, and colorful. Ballistic has come up with seven cases in the series that will attract the attention of just about everyone.

There's a white case with imperial blue accents, a white case with a pink flower pattern, an eye-jarring mint green case with strawberry pink accents, a much more soothing raspberry case with gray accents, a black case with a charcoal gray hexagon pattern and accents, a black case with lime green accents and a black case with gray accents.

Ballistic's new Aspira case line for iPhone 5

All of the cases are made of a glossy material excecpt for those accents that cover the corners, ends, and front of the case -- those are made of regular silicone material for shock absorbency.

The cases are really light, just a featherweight 0.9 ounce, and they add just a tiny bit of thickness to your sexy iPhone 5. The flower and hexagon pattern cases offer an extra measure of "grippiness" to an otherwise slick surface; something to think about if you want to keep a good grip on your investment.

Functionality

A good case should provide protection and add some style to your phone, and the Aspira series touches all the bases. Ballistic is well-known for putting a touch more thickness into the corners of their cases which really adds to the impact protection.

Ballistic's new Aspira case line for iPhone 5

The cases are all dual-layer, so the back of the case not only has that shiny surface for protection but an inner silicone layer of cushion as well. The non-patterned models use an anti-scratch coating to keep the glossy surface from getting beat up.

I like the way that the Aspira cases fit on the iPhone 5. The cases are easy to install and take off, but the fit is snug enough to keep the cases from falling off. One of my pet peeves with some other silicone cases is that they can have a tendency to "sag" a little and look sloppy; that's definitely not the situation with these cases.

Conclusion

While I think the Aspira series cases might be a little more pricy than they should be, Ballistic has come up with a very functional and attractive line of cases.

Pros

  • Good protection for your iPhone 5, particularly on the corners where there is extra padding
  • Fun and bright colors and patterns
  • Textured cases provide a good gripping surface
  • Shiny cases are treated with an anti-scratch coating

Cons

Who are they for?

  • iPhone 5 owners who want a thin, lightweight, and attractive case that provides excellent protection.

Three TUAW readers are going to win an Aspira series iPhone 5 case from Ballistic. We have one white with the pink floral patter and accents, one black with the grey hexagon pattern and accents, and one black with green accents. Here are the rules for the giveaway:

BitTorrent Sync rivals the cloud via peer-to-peer sharing

BitTorrent's Sync application lets users sync (hence the name) content across their devices creating an alternative to the cloud-based storage model.

Sync operates using a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol similar to that used in BitTorrent itself and creates up-to-date copies of synced folders across any paired device. In comparison, cloud-based storage works using a third party data storage centre which can then be accessed from multiple locations.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: flying electric car, 3D-printed livers and a two-story-tall bike

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

The Northern Hemisphere is finally beginning to wake up from a long, cold winter, and green vehicles are taking to the skies. This week Korean automaker Hyundai unveiled a multi-rotor flying electric car for congested cities and SolarWorld and PC-Aero announced plans to launch two new solar-powered electric airplanes at an air show in Germany. Speaking of sun-powered planes, the Solar Impulse just made its final test flight around the San Francisco Bay Area before embarking on a cross-country voyage next week. Even cycling is reaching new heights -- bike hacker Richie Trimble recently built a two-story-tall bike that soars above car traffic.

Tesco pulls listing for Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts - as spotted by OPM

Tesco Direct may have accidentally poured cold water on whatever surprise launch spectacular Activision had planned for Call of Duty: Ghosts.

According to OPM, a listings page on Tesco's website briefly appeared giving the title a 30 December 2013 release date. Although the date seems unlikely as it would miss all the Christmas sales traffic an end-of-year release around November time would make sense.

Let's banish cards and cash and embrace the digital wallet

For thousands of years we have used stones, shells, coins and paper as portable value. A tradable currency if you will, mere tokens of trust we can use to buy and sell our goods, commodities and services. Cheque books, cards, digital money and wallets are just recent manifestations of the same progressive need for greater portability and utility. As ever, trust and security are the really big deal.

It is hard to think of anything more insecure than coins, notes, cheque books, and plastic cards -- yet the spotlight is never pointed in that direction.  It seems to be permanently focused on digital money.  But the internet and digital wallets alike are considerably more secure than any "currency of atoms' we pass hand to hand.

This is accepted in Japan, Korea and Africa, where banks expect account holders to adopt the "digital wallet" facilities on their smart phones.  Of course, if people are taking a trip into the past and touring the West plastic cards are still available.

Korean researchers remotely control turtles using non-invasive system

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have managed to remotely control the movements of a turtle using a non-invasive steering system.

The team used completely untrained red-eared sliders for their research, and played with their innate obstacle-avoidance behaviour. If they see that something is blocking their path in one direction, they naturally move to avoid it.  In order to control the turtles' movements, researchers attached a black half cylinder to the turtle, a little like the visor of a motorcycle helmet, but opaque and with a cover on the top to block any light from above. This was initially positioned around the turtles rear end, but was pivoted around using a microcontroller and a servo motor to either the left or the right to partially block the turtles vision on one side. This made the turtle believe there was an obstacle it needed to avoid on that side and so encouraged it to move in the other direction.

Inside the cycleplex: the weird, wild world of Google Bikes

Google bikes

Not far from Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, there's a nondescript building that looks like it might be home to stealth startup. But if you walk in the front door, you won't find cubicles or computers. You'll find a secret bike shop where people like Robert Jimenez and Terry Mac twist wrenches and true tires all day long, rocking out to AC/DC and Pink Floyd. Then, if you slip into the back room, you'll see them: 1,300 green, blue, red and yellow Google Bikes, stacked Santa's workshop-style as far the eye can see.

This building is the nervous system for a remarkable campus-wide bike-sharing program that doubles as a mirror of the search giant's corporate culture.
