Curiosity Rover detects water and organic compounds on Mars

Rocknest scoop sample

After two weeks of speculation following Caltech geologist John Grotzinger's announcement that the Curiosity Rover's Martian soil analysis data would be "one for the history books" the results of the soil scoop are finally in.

According to Nasa the rover's onboard laboratory found water, sulphur and chlorine-containing substances in the sample taken from the Rocknest site in Mars' Gale Crater. The chlorine-containing substances include the chlorine and oxygen compound perchlorate which had previously been found in arctic Martian soil by the Phoenix Lander.
