BlogWorld 2011 Recap

As we mentioned last week, some members of the Blogger team from Google HQ in Mountain View, Tokyo, Dublin, and Sydney (see group photo below) headed to Los Angeles to attend the 2011 BlogWorld & New Media Expo.

One of the primary reasons we attended the expo was to meet Blogger users 1:1, and to gain a better understanding of what we can do to improve the product to better meet your needs.

In addition to these discussions, we conducted surveys with many conference attendees to collect more in-depth feedback. Thank you! We really appreciate the valuable and candid responses.

In the survey results and our 1:1 discussions with you we heard a few common themes:
  • You’re hoping to widen your audience with Google+
  • You’d like more opportunities to customize and use gadgets with Dynamic Views
  • You’re looking for tips and best practices for how to make more money from your blog with AdSense
Your requests have been shared with the broader team and we’re hard at work making them happen for you. Stay tuned to the Buzz Blog in the coming weeks for follow ups, and in the meantime, check out some other photos from the expo below.

A Round-Up Of All The New Tools Google Gave To App Developers

google ioMany Of Google's New App Developer Tools Focus On Location-Based Services (SAI)
Google rolled out a series of new features and products for its developer community yesterday. It introduced three new location-based APIs: the Fused Location Provider, which will drastically reduce the battery drain of location features; the Google Geofencing API, which allows apps to respond to users entering or exiting defined geographic areas, sure to be a boon to mobile advertising; and the Activity Recognition API, which will automatically determine if users are walking, running or biking (you can read one developer's thoughts on the new APIs here). Games Also Got An Overhaul (Engadget)
Google Play Game Services
brings real-time multiplayer to mobile games, allows users to continue games across devices, and will work across Android, iOS, and the Web. It also comes with an API to monitor piracy, a big issue on Android. Read >

Sundar Pichai's Strategy: Focus On Apps And Services, And Users (Wired)
Why so much focus on developers? Revenue per Android user has grown 2.5 times from a year ago, per Android boss Sundar Pichai, but it still badly lags rival iOS, especially considering its installed base advantage. Pichai recently told Wired, "Users care about applications and services they use, not operating systems." And who builds those apps and services? Read >

Google Also Released Google Play Music, A Spotify Competitor (The Verge)
Users can now stream music, create on-demand radio, and combine locally stored and streaming tracks into a master playlist for $9.99 per month, the same as Spotify. Unlike Spotify, however, it does not appear to have a free service (i.e. it is not a freemium model). It is not clear what the real advantage of Google Play Music is, if any, excepting perhaps better integration with your Android device. Read >

And Google Hangouts ... A Mobile Messaging App (The Verge)
Similar to WhatsApp, Kik, and Facebook Messenger, it is now available and will eventually replace Google's other communication properties, like Google Talk and Google+ Messenger. Given Google's massive user base, this will only exacerbate carriers' anxieties over lost SMS revenue. However, the mobile messaging space has become very crowded recently, as we discussed in our report on messaging apps. As if that wasn't enough, Google also announced today that users of Google Wallet will be able to send money to friends via Gmail, even if the friend doesn't have Wallet. Read >

Mobile Malware Is Exploding—On Android (AppleInsider)
The number of mobile malware families and variants grew nearly 50% in the first quarter, but almost exclusively on Android (with a little on Nokia's antiquated Symbian platform), according to malware researchers F-Secure Labs. About three-quarters of threats are designed to con users out of money, rather than maliciously damage devices. Increasingly, malware developers are creating specialized programs to target weaknesses in the Android platform. This isn't possible under Apple's "closed garden" approach to iOS. Even if Google were to patch the holes, it wouldn't be very effective since most users never update their software. One researcher says the "Android malware ecosystem is beginning to resemble ... Windows." Read >

Mobile Accounts For Nearly Half Of Jackthreads' Orders (TechCrunch)
The next wave of e-commerce companies are increasingly mobile-focused. Jackthreads is a flash sale site for contemporary men's fashion that expects to generate $75 to $100 million in revenue this year. Mobile accounts for more than 10% of U.S. e-commerce sales now. Read >

Rovio, Maker Of Angry Birds, Releases Other Developers' Games (PC Mag)
The first two games developed by outside developers, Icebreaker and Tiny Thief, are "coming soon." Rovio appears to be transforming itself into a mobile games studio. With games accounting for the bulk of time and money spent on mobile, it stands to reasons that money would be left on the table if Rovio leaned exclusively on in-house developers. Read >

A more dynamic mobile reading experience

Last year we introduced mobile templates on Blogger, and Dynamic Views for the desktop. Since then, over 2 million blogs have started using Dynamic Views on desktop, and users have asked us for more mobile features. So today, we’re bringing the speed and advanced reading experience of Dynamic Views to mobile.  Configuring your blog to use a Dynamic View on mobile will result in a reading experience that mirrors the desktop, but is optimized for mobile.

To configure a Dynamic View for mobile on your blog, select the "Template" tab, and then click on the settings cog under the “Mobile” preview.

If you’re currently using Dynamic Views on the desktop and have the “Default” mobile template selected, you don’t need to do anything -- your blog will automatically start using the mobile optimized view when viewed from a compatible mobile browser. For more information, see Blogger Help.

Currently, only the “Classic” view, which is best suited for small screens, will be shown on mobile. Tablets with large screens will get the full desktop experience. As with the older mobile templates, supported browsers are WebKit-based browsers (such as Android Browser, Chrome for Android and iOS, and Mobile Safari).

We hope your readers enjoy the modern, compelling experience that this mobile update provides.

Study: iPhone retains value better than top Galaxy models

Study iPhone retains value better than top Galaxy models

The next time your Samsung Galaxy-toting friends try to annoy you, here's a piece of information you can throw back at them. According to a study published yesterday by investment bank Piper Jaffray, iPhones depreciate at less than half the rate of similar Android devices from Samsung.

Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray referred to the new index as "a pulse on what consumers are willing to pay for unsubsidized phones in the US." The index compares US eBay auction ending prices for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II over a rolling eight weeks to create a trend on resale prices.

"The key takeaway from eight weeks of data is that the iPhone is holding slightly more of its value compared to the top two Galaxy phones," according to Munster. The iPhone 5's eBay auction ending value dropped about 11.2 percent in the last eight weeks, while the comparable Samsung Galaxy S III dropped 13.7 percent in value.

The iPhone 4S kept its value the best, dropping only 7 percent during the same time period. The Galaxy Note II did the worst job of retaining its value, dropping a full 15 percent in just eight weeks. Munster expects iPhone aftermarket prices to drop as the release of the next model of iPhone draws nearer.

The growth of freelancing is partly thanks to the uncertain economy, which...

Ubisoft: next-gen will offer 'major leap in quality'

CEO Yves Guillemot says upcoming platforms will allow for "extraordinary level of immersion"; full-year sales rise 18 percent to €1.256 billion.

Next-generation platforms from Microsoft and Sony will offer a "major leap in quality," according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Speaking today during the company's latest earnings report, the executive shared high hopes for the upcoming systems.

"A new console cycle is beginning and it will offer players an unrivalled experience," Guillemot said in prepared remarks. "They will see a major leap in quality with an extraordinary level of immersion as well as the incorporation of all of the innovations developed in recent years in online and social games, giving players the opportunity to create their own experiences and share them within their communities.

Ubisoft also revealed sales updates for some of its biggest games launched in the past year. The company called out record-breaking sales of Assassin's Creed III (12.5 million shipped and digital units) and Far Cry 3 (6 million shipped and digital units). In addition, Just Dance 4 has now shipped 8.5 million units sold since launch last year.

Overall, Ubisoft posted full-year sales of €1.256 billion ($1.6 billion) for the year ended March 31, up 18.4 percent from last year. Of this total, €928 million ($1.2 billion) came from core game sales, up 60 percent year-over-year. Net income for the year stood at €69.2 million ($89 million).

Online and digital sales were a bright spot for Ubisoft during the year, jumping 86 percent to €148 million ($190 million) in the year, making up 11.7 percent of Ubisoft's overall sales.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft said it expects full-year 2013-12 sales of between €1.420 billion ($1.8 billion) and €1.450 billion ($1.86 billion). Revenue from core games is expected to "rise strongly," the company said, thanks to the launch of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Watch Dogs, and two titles that have not yet been announced.
