Tomato genome has been sequenced

The genome of the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, has been fully sequenced. The decoded DNA has been published in the journal Nature, and made available online.

"For any characteristic of the tomato, whether it's taste, natural pest resistance or nutritional content, we've captured virtually all those genes," said Cornell University molecular biologist James Giovannoni, who lead the US arm of this global tomato-sequencing effort.
