TUAW TV Live: Bags, books, batteries and bandwidth

What's with all of the "Bs" in the headline? Hell, I don't know. It's just a way to get my thoughts somewhat organized for the show. Looking around the TUAW TV Studio, I have a nice 13-inch laptop bag, a non-surprising assortment of iPhone cases, a book about Apple and a number of other things that I can chat about. To top it off, there's always my experimentation over this last week to figure out what was going on with Ustream during the last episode.

Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. IRC fans can join in on the chat by heading to server chat1.ustream.tv, chatroom #tuaw-tv. You'll be watching the show in glorious HD!

News Corp. to release education focused 10-inch Amplify tablet

News Corp. will be announcing a 10-inch Android tablet designed for K12 schools Wednesday at the SXSWedu conference in Austin, Texas according to the New York Times. Led by former chancellor of New York City schools Joel Klein, News Corp.'s Amplify division is aiming to make headway with Android into the school system, and their first offering is an ASUS built tablet, an entire curriculum, and the infrastructure to support it all.

The tablet uses what Amplify is calling a “blended learning” model that combines new technology with current teaching methods. When a student starts to drift away from the prepared lesson, they will be warned with a pop-up advising them to put their "eyes on teacher". In addition, students will be able to take their tablet home each night, and use it to play educational games.

A tablet running the special software, training, and customer care options starts at $299, with a two-year subscription for an additional $99 yearly. For students without Internet access at their homes, a premium model will be available with a 4G data plan at $349.

The pricing is reasonable, and it appears that News Corp. is serious about providing support. It's nice to see Android move into a space once dominated by Apple and Microsoft, and we wish everyone involved the best of luck.

Record labels laugh at Apple's proposed royalty rate for streaming service

The New York Post has an exclusive today about Apple's attempts to get rights from record labels for a proposed music streaming service, which are apparently falling on deaf ears because its offer is "seen as way too cheap."

A high-level executive at one label told the Post that "Apple wants a rate that is lower than Pandora's," and the numbers don't lie. Pandora currently pays a royalty of US$0.12 per 100 songs streamed; Apple's initial offer was about 6 cents per 100 songs streamed.

Spotify currently pays the highest royalty rates at about 35 cents per 100 songs streamed, and the Post notes that music label insiders think that Apple should pay at least 21 cents per 100 songs. That's the rate set by the Copyright Royalty Board for companies that don't own broadcast operations.

The Apple streaming service, which is rumored to be named iRadio, is expected to be ad-supported and was widely expected to be available at the launch of the iPhone 5 last fall. A source for the Post said, "Everyone's had their initial meetings and everyone is preparing counters." Hopefully Apple will be able to iron out the details before the next iPhone is ready to roll.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance VR DLC out next week

30 challenge missions for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance locked to PlayStation 3 in the US; available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 internationally.

 

The first batch of DLC for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released next week, Konami has announced.

The VR Missions DLC will add 30 challenges to the game, and are designed to emulate the aesthetic of the virtual reality training parts of previous Metal Gear games.

In North America the VR Missions DLC is exclusive to the PlayStation 3, where it will be offered for free from March 12 until April 3.

In Europe the pack will launch on March 13 and cost £1.99 on PlayStation 3, or 240 Microsoft Points on Xbox 360.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance scored an 8.5 in its GameSpot review.

AT&T HTC One X finally gets Jelly Bean

Update 2: Never mind AT&T's blog post ... the update most definitely is available now. It's a whopping 630 MB.

Update: And AT&T has pulled its blog post announcing all this. Figures.

Original: AT&T today finally announced that its HTC One X is getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean starting today. 

We'll let that sink in for a minute. This one's been a long time coming.

In addition to the expected Google improvements, such as Google Now, Project Butter, better notifications and all those other improvements we've been enjoying on other phones for some time, you'll get:

• A new countdown timer for the front-facing camera. 
• ISIS mobile payments. This is worthless unless you're in Austin, Texas, or Salt Lake City.
• AT&T Locker, so you can store your photos, videos and docs in the cloud. Which you can also do just fine without AT&T-specific software.
• AT&T DriveMode, which can be set up to send custom replies to incoming messages once your phone (presumably in a car) is going more than 25 mph. This is a good thing. Use it.
• AT&T Messages: A single inbox for texts, calls and voicemails, accessible from your phone, tablet or computer. Should interesting.

AT&T says the update should be available any time now, though we don't see it yet, and now we've got that blasted "You can't check for updates again for another 24 hours," which is as annoying as ever.

Evernote resets passwords after user data accessed by hackers

Payment info safe

Evernote has announced that its databases have been hacked, forcing the reset of almost 50 million users’ passwords as a?precaution to protect data.

The note-taking company says that no notes or content stored on Evernote were accessed, nor was any payment information. However the hackers were able to gain access to user information, including usernames, email addresses associated with Evernote accounts, and encrypted passwords.

Evernote says it believes passwords are safe thanks to "robust" password encryption. It does want to take "an abundance of caution" and force users to reset their passwords upon signing back in for the first time.?

"We take our responsibility to keep your data safe very seriously, and we’re constantly enhancing the security of our service infrastructure to protect Evernote and your content," the company said in a blog post.?

This type of hacking has been?prevalent?over the past month, as Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and others have reported similar situations. Apple's statement on the matter said:?“there is no evidence that any data left Apple.” The string of hacks is believed to originate from eastern Europe.

In recent weeks, Apple has blocked Java 7 from Macs, after it was found to have a serious vulnerability. Browser company Mozilla did the same with Firefox as a security measure.?

In the most recent case of hacking, users on Evernote's blog were happy the company was transparent about the issue. However many voiced concern over how long it took to?receive?an email explaining the situation.?

The company concluded with: "We apologise for the annoyance of having to change your password, but, ultimately, we believe this simple step will result in a more secure Evernote experience."

Samsung posts NX1100 camera manual prematurely, shows a subtle upgrade

Samsung must not be very attached to the NX1000: the mirrorless camera isn't even a year old, and its creator is already rushing to post details of the follow-up. Manuals for the NX1100 have surfaced on the company's site that confirm the camera's look while revealing details. And... it's no great shakes, at least from what Samsung has disclosed. There's still a 20.3-megapixel sensor, an ISO 12,800 sensitivity limit, a 3-inch LCD and 802.11n WiFi. Software also looks similar on the surface. As long as the manuals aren't just placeholders, then, the improvements are likely tougher to quantify. We just hope that official documentation means a short wait.
