Both US presidential candidates pushing iPhone apps

It's an election year, iOS devices are almost everywhere, and that's why both US Presidential candidates this year are already pushing iPhone apps. Governor Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, has released an app called Mitt's VP -- he plans to announce his choice for Vice President from that app first, and there's other sharing and notification features coming in the app as well.

President Barack Obama has made a lot of waves for using digital media in his campaigns, and so of course there's an official Obama for America app. That app also shares news and allows for social sharing about the Obama campaign, and allows users to sign up to volunteer at campaign events, or help get out the vote in other ways.

Apple's platform consists of a huge audience of well-connected people, so it's no surprise that the presidential election is reflected in the App Store. As we get closer and closer to November's election here in America, it'll be interesting to see how the candidates use these apps to reach out to their voter base.

Smart Cover patent

Apple has recently been granted a patent for a Smart Cover with an integrated flexible display, that could show messages and media controls when connected to an iPad.

The current Smart Cover is Apple's screen protector for the iPad 2 and 3 that uses magnets to latch onto the tablet, and also automatically unlock the screen when you peel it open.

iOS developer Readdle celebrates its 5th anniversary

A few weeks after the debut of the original iPhone in 2007, Readdle's first product, a web service for reading documents, launched. Two of the four co-founders had previous experience in development and programming for other platforms, including mobile and web. In 2008, after the App Store opened, ReaddleDocs was Readdle's first official App Store offering.

Readdle is celebrating its fifth anniversary today, and marketing manager Denys Zhadanov said it's much harder to for apps to break through now because of competition, big names, marketing and other factors. "Despite all that, [the] iOS platform is so huge and innovative that you can always come up with something fresh and unique."

Readdle's enthusiasm for its products is still going strong. I was impressed by Readdle's booth at Macworld | iWorld 2012, where it was previewing Remarks, the company's latest app for notetaking and PDF annotation. Readdle now spans two offices in Europe and the U.S., and its staff has grown to more than 30 people. There's more than 5.5 million users of Readdle's apps now, and Zhadanov said there's several big products planned.

To celebrate Readdle's anniversary, the company is placing all of its apps on sale for the next two days. The discounts are up to 70% off the apps' original price, so if you've been waiting to purchase a Readdle product, now is a good time to do so.

The apps covered by the discount include the following:

Happy anniversary to Readdle; we look forward to seeing what the firm has in store in the future.

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed surround sound without the cords

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed 51channel audio without the cords

See that little box next to those huge speakers? That's Aperion Audio's ticket to what's reportedly a no-compromise approach to wireless home theater. The Intimus 4T Summit Wireless is billed as the only system of its kind to transmit uncompressed 24-bit, 96KHz audio to its 5.1- or 7.1-channel speaker array without having to string wires across the living room. There's no interference and no more than 5ms of lag, even when that wunderkind box is processing Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Aperion is still touting an easy setup that can create a sweet spot in awkward spaces. If you like the idea, the only real catches are the $2,999 and $3,499 prices for the respective 5.1- and 7.1-channel systems -- although the outlay may be worthwhile to cut the clutter without sacrificing the finer details of Blu-ray movie soundtracks.

After Conquering Yahoo, Dan Loeb Wrote A Victory Letter To His Investors – We Have A Copy (YHOO)

loeb viking

Way back in the first quarter, hedge fund manager Dan Loeb bought a huge stake in Yahoo, and then launched a proxy war on its board.

Eventually, Loeb targeted Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson, and got him booted from the company for misstating his academic record.

Today, Loeb's firm, Third Point, wrote a letter to its own investors updating them on the fund's Q2 performance.

There's a big section on Yahoo in it. It amounts to something of a victory speech for Yahoo's conqueror. We obtained a copy of this section from a source.

Here are some highlights from the letter, and our comments on them in italics.

  • It wasn't a great quarter, and it turns out that Yahoo was Loeb's strongest investment during the period.
  • Loeb expects Yahoo to close its Alibaba stock sale before the end of October. That'll give Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer $5 billion to spend. Loeb expects Yahoo to return the amount to shareholders.  We hope she does not.
  • Loeb dressed up Yahoo's failed patent lawsuit against Facebook as an "expanded partnership between the two companies."    That's ridiculous. It was a blowout loss for Yahoo. An embarrassment from start to finish.
  • Loeb describes Mayer as "a leading innovator in Silicon Valley whose creative vision made her a critical part of Google’s leadership team."  He says she is responsible for Google's "iconic home page design." Mayer certainly played a big role in Google's development.  She was in charge of a lot of people at Google. Her role on Google's leadership team is up for debate.
  • Loeb calls his fight with Thompson a "kerfuffle."

Here is the Yahoo section of the letter:

Third Point’s investment in Yahoo! appreciated 4% during the second quarter. Due to Yahoo!’s concentrated size in our funds, this modest appreciation still made it the biggest winner for the period.

We were pleased to have favorably resolved the proxy contest we commenced in Q1. Following a subsequent kerfuffle involving misstated academic records of its then‐CEO and a now former board member, Yahoo!’s directors determined that it was in the best interests of the Company to invite our nominees Daniel Loeb, Michael Wolf, and Harry Wilson onto the board.

Since we joined the Board in mid‐May, Yahoo! has achieved three significant milestones. First, Yahoo! and Alibaba, the privately held Chinese internet company in which Yahoo! owns a 40% stake, reached an agreement for Alibaba to repurchase about half of that position at an attractive valuation. This agreement provides pricing transparency and a path to liquidity for this key Yahoo! asset, and is expected to close sometime in Q3. Yahoo! has indicated that it will return substantially all of the expected $5B of cash it will receive from this transaction to shareholders. Second, the Company was able to amicably settle a patent lawsuit filed in the first quarter against Facebook, one of its largest partners, resulting in a new, expanded partnership between the two companies.

Lastly, Yahoo recently appointed Marissa Mayer as CEO. Mayer, a Stanford graduate with a B.A. in Symbolic Systems and M.S. in Computer Science, was Google’s 20th employee when she joined the fledging company in 1999. During her 13 years at Google, she oversaw the design of numerous well‐known products and was responsible for its iconic home page design. Mayer is a leading innovator in Silicon Valley whose creative vision made her a critical part of Google’s leadership team. Her appointment was received favorably by employees and the tech community. We were very pleased to have had the opportunity to work with our fellow directors towards this extremely positive outcome and wish Marissa the best.
