MIPS announces $125 Jelly Bean tablet

Low-cost chip designer MIPS has announced today that they're releasing the "World’s Lowest-Cost Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ Tablet" at the surprisingly low price of $125. If the MIPS name rings a bell, you may remember we reviewed the MIPS Novos 7 back in December of last year. Similarly to the Novos 7, MIPS has teamed up with Chinese chip maker Ingenic to produce this tablet, currently being marketed as the Karbonn Smart Tab 1, for sale immediately in India, and assumedly through other channels to the rest of the world soon.

As far as specs, the Karbonn Smart Tab 1 isn't exactly a barn burner, but you get what you pay for:

• 7-inch capacitive touchscreen
• 1.2 Ghz Ingenic JZ4770 processor
• 2MP front-facing camera
• 1GB of storage, expandable to 32GB
• 3700 mAh battery

French retailer seeks to trademark Anonymous logo

A French company called Early Flicker is trying to trademark the logo and slogan of the loosely associated hacktivist group Anonymous.

In a trademark filing from earlier this year, a person called Apollinaire Auffret from Early Flicker applied to the Institut National De La Propriété Industrielle (INPI) to protect the logo, which features a headless suited man, standing before a globe and flanked by a wreath. The same company has also applied to protect the accompanying slogan: "Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."

Star Trek: TNG S1 Blu-ray set has an audio flaw, free replacements are available

Soon after the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season One Blu-ray set launched last week reports came in that there was an audio problem with the surround sound, and now CBS and Paramount have responded. According to a statement (included after the break) the problem is isolated to the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track on some episodes where the front channels are mapped incorrectly. If you own the set, you can email (phe.stng@bydeluxe.com) or call (877-335-8936 between 8AM and 6PM PT) for replacements of Discs 1, 3 and 4, simply have your set nearby and ready to read the code located on the inner ring. You won't need to send in your discs, and the replacements are expected to ship after August 10th and take up to five days to arrive.

Microsoft Will Launch The Version Of Windows That Really Matters On September 4 (MSFT)

Microsoft announced the launch date of its other version of Windows, the one that runs on servers.

While not as sexy as Windows 8, the server version is arguably more important.

In its most recent fiscal year, Microsoft's Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division—the business unit that licenses the desktop version to PC makers.

Windows Server 2012 is at the heart of Microsoft's plans for the future.

Last month, Satya Nadella, president of Microsoft's Server And Tools unit previewed the new server OS, dubbing it a cloud OS. It includes a bunch of new features to help companies build private clouds, where companies use cloud-computing technologies in their own data centers.

What Siri foretells for the future of semantic search

Siri is a step forward for iOS users who can use the virtual assistant to set reminders and send messages, but for developer and entrepreneur Ndav Gur, Siri represents more. "Siri has made strong headway into literally understanding you (voice to text) but more importantly about deriving meaning from what a user has just said," Gur writes in a recent TechCrunch post.

What makes Siri exciting is its ability to support natural language now and semantic search in the future. Semantic search moves us away from keyword-based search and into queries based on concepts. Using semantic search, users get knowledge as a result, instead of just information. It's like asking about the weather and getting advice on what to wear, instead of just the local temperature.

Siri is ahead of the game in this arena and is such an "existential threat" to Google's keyword search that Google has recently announced that it's working on its own semantic search algorithm. Gur is the founder and CEO of Desti, a company that created its own virtual personal assistant for travelers. You can read more about Siri and semantic search in his guest post on TechCrunch.

Dynamic Views: Update #2

Hi Bloggers!

Thanks again for all the terrific feedback on Dynamic Views. Over half a million blogs have selected Dynamic Views as their default template since they were introduced less than a month ago, which is solid evidence that you’re as excited about this new technology as we are!

As I mentioned in my last update, we’ve been working hard to respond to your feedback and quickly introduce enhancements. The ability to customize Dynamic Views has been a top request, so I’m pleased to announce that as of today, this is now possible.

Using the Template Designer, you can now modify your background, fonts, or colors, and add a custom header image like we did on Blogger Buzz (just make sure it’s 65 pixels high). If you don’t fancy yourself a web designer, simply choose from one of the “suggested themes” that we provide.

To begin personalizing your blog, log in to the Blogger dashboard, select “Template”, choose from one of the seven Dynamic Views, and then click “Customize” to access the Template Designer.

Century Media has a change of heart, reinstates Spotify catalogue

Metal music label Century Media Records has returned to Spotify, after pulling its entire catalogue from the streaming service in 2011.

The record company, and its associated labels InsideOut Music, Superball Music and People Like You Records has put its entire repertoire back on Spotify, citing "fan sentiment" as a leading reason in reversing its decision.
